Navigating Tariffs: Supplying SKD Kits for an African Balcony Solar & ESS Project
-
Business Model: SKD/CKD Delivery & Localized Assembly
-
Client Background: A local green energy project integrator in South Africa.
-
The Challenge: Extreme local grid instability caused a massive surge in demand for solar-plus-storage systems. However, aggressive import tariffs on finished lithium battery units and exorbitant sea freight costs made importing turnkey products financially unviable.
-
Our Solution: Instead of supplying finished goods, we provided comprehensive SKD (Semi-Knocked-Down) Kits. We manufactured and delivered fully tested PCBA mainboards with embedded BMS, custom internal wire harnesses, precision-molded enclosures, and retail packaging. We then provided technical guidance for the client to perform final assembly and cell matching locally.
-
The Results: The client successfully bypassed a 25% import tariff on finished battery goods. By drastically reducing shipping volume, sea freight overhead was cut by 40%, and the brand seamlessly complied with local-content manufacturing regulations.
